Fuzzy, Pal, and Darrel (Part I)
Based on Grandpa’s True Story
By Carol Montgomery © 2011

Narrator: It was about 1932 in Mesa, Arizona. Times were tough. Pa, Mama, and Darrel lived on a small farm.

Pa: Now Darrel, there’s a lot of work to be done around the farm before we go to town this weekend. I want you to help your Mama.

Darrel: Yes, Pa.

Pa: I know you’re only 5-years-old, and you’ve been sick, but you can still help your Mama with the garden and chores some while I work the farm.

Darrel: Yes, Pa. Is it okay if I play with Pal and Fuzzy, too?

Pa: (smiles) Sure, Honey. That’s why we got them--to keep you company. See you later.

Darrel: Bye, Pa.

Narrator: And Pa left to work the farm. But, Mama wasn’t done yet...

Mama: I am going to need some help with the garden later. You understand? Make sure you can hear me when I call you, Honey.

Darrel: Yes, Mama. May I go out now? I want to play hide and seek in the Chinaberry trees with Pal and Fuzzy.

Mama: I guess. If you see your Pa out there remind him we’d like a watermelon for dinner.

Darrel: Okay! Call me when you need me, Mama!

Narrator: Darrel ran outside with his collie, Pal, and his little donkey, Fuzzy, to play. He had gotten Fuzzy when Fuzzy was just eleven weeks old. Now Fuzzy was bigger, but not grown up.

Darrel: I sure am glad I have you two. Fuzzy, you’re the best friend a boy could have. And Pal, you’re the best pal a boy could have. Ha! Ha! Can’t catch me!

Narrator: And Darrel ran off toward the Chinaberry trees with Pal and Fuzzy chasing him. Darrel darted behind a big tree trunk and stood still. Pal and Fuzzy found him right away. No matter where Darrel hid, Pal and Fuzzy always found him.

Darrel: Too bad I can’t teach you two to count. Then we could REALLY play hide and seek!

Narrator: The three of them played, scampering among the trees. Soon Mama called, (Continued...)
